Re: SAving the 1st AR US Flag by Colored Man

"I don't think the paper meant it as a slam"

I am sure that the paper didn't mean it as a slam also. But somebody did abandon that flag.

"That was emphasized by how they described him as acting soldierly"

Which wasn't his duty, and means that someone else didn't act soldierly who duty it was to take care of that flag.

"The 1st Sgt., who was ultimately responsible for it, simply forgot it amid the numerous things to pack away for the trip home."

And I would bet that he caught H--- for that mistake. Maybe not in public, but I bet he did behind the closed doors of the Captains office.

Anthony Rushing has been tracing down a flag of the 2nd Arkansas battalion (CS) captured in a trunk in their camp in Virginia. But in that case the flag had been stored in the truck because it had been officially replaced with newly issued Battleflag. That may have been the case with this flag.

In the case of the 2nd Ark Batt. they had been called away from their camp with their brigade to meet another threat and were expecting to return when a Union landing party raided their encampment.
