What Were "Whitney Rifles"

I have run across reference to "Whitney Rifles" and am wondering what type of rifle this refers to. Ammunition returns indicate that they came in two calibers, .58 and .54, the latter caliber being less common. I assume the "Whitney" reference is to the Whitney works in New England, and am curious as to whether this was just a contract version of the regular army musket. Has anybody ever seen an example or a picture of a "Whitney Rifle"?
