David, an interesting footnote about Co. K, 14th (McCarver's) Arkansas, even though it wasn't part of the group of companies that went to the 8th Arkansas Regiment -- it was initially one of the two-dozen or so 30-day volunteer companies which were organized in response to Col. Solon Borland's call of November 5, 1861. It was mustered into service for thirty days as Co. D, 2nd Regiment 30-Day Volunteers, at Camp Borland, near Pocahontas, Arkansas, on November 24, 1861. When the regiment was mustered out on December 18, 1861, the majority of the company voted to stay in the service for an additional twelve months as Co. K of McCarver's 14th Arkansas Regiment. I've always intended to try to find out why this company was one of the very few 30-day companies to extend their enlistment, but, as usual, just haven't been able to find the time. I wonder if McCarver or Borland gave them a pep talk?
