According to the Arkansas Confederate Pension index, Mrs. Hester A. Ross, widow of Richard Ross, applied for a pension from Grant County in 1909, citing her husband's service in Co. E, 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, in 1864-1865. She stated that he had died on December 26, 1886. Her application was approved on August 4, 1909 (Pension No. 4635).

There are no surviving muster rolls from the 1864-1865 period in which he served, so there is no record of his service. In fact, it's uncertain just which regiment he may have served in, since several regiments went by the unofficial moniker of 2nd Arkansas Cavalry. The "real" 2nd Arkansas Cavalry was Slemons' regiment, but there are no muster rolls later than mid-1863.

Mrs. Ross' application might provide a clue, if she stated when, where and by whom her husband was enlisted; or if there are corroborating statements from former comrades whose names are listed in earlier muster rolls.
