Re: John H Moore

No concrete answers, but possibly some more directions to pursue. John H. Moore of the 1st Cav entered with rank. Since rank was frequently bestowed by one’s peers, this suggests he had been living in the area long enough to have become well known. The only John Moore living in Phillips County in 1860 was age 30, a plantation manager, and a native of Virginia.

This does not rule out the John H. Moore buried in Oak Forrest Cemetery in Lee County, however. His family does appear in the 1870 Phillips County Census. I know this to be the John H. Moore buried in Oak Forrest Cemetery, as his wife and daughter (also buried in Oak Forrest) appear on that census record with him. All names and dates match. This John was born ca 1834 in North Carolina. I did not find him on the 1860 Arkansas Census, which means the enumerator missed him (not a rare occurrence), or he might have been living outside the state. He would have had two years to get to Arkansas before enlisting in 1862.
