I'm reminded of a contract one of my ancestors worked up in the early 1700s in Virginia. His name was spelled three different ways in the contract, and signed a fourth way. And he wrote the contract himself! Howerton is spelled exactly as it's pronounced, so you wouldn't think there would be any variants like that.
