Re: Alf Johnson's Texas Spy Co.

Outstanding Doyle,

I knew of Avitt and Robertson from other sources.See Osterhaus to Curtis 5/31/62.Mentions deserters from Johnson's Texas Rangers.Other sources say Johnson may have been employing spies.

I had no idea the speech was reprinted in the Arkansas paper.I knew it was in the McKinney paper but makes sense others would pick it up.How ironic that McCulloch,in desperate need of reliable information early in the war, personaly picked Alf Johnson and authorized the formation of the Independent Spy Co.And that McCulloch was in his coffin at the town square in McKinney on the day the Company got its flag and marched off to war.March 17,1862.

Regarding the slanderous accusations against Captain Johnson.Had no idea also this reached such proportions to make the papers.I have some of Captain Johnson's letters written to his wife during the war in which he comments on the subject.Apparently some of the older men may have mutinied for whatever reason and he told his wife he got rid of them.It is interesting that the ringleader was an old Texas ranger and Mexican War veteran.
