Hello. Your Thayer ancestors probably did like a ggg uncle of mine did. He was with the Confedeates and my connection, Edmund Guthrie of the 35th Arkansas deserted from Little Rock in May of 1863 along with some Prices that were probably his relations.
Then he went home to Pope County. In the fall of 63, he joined the Union Cav.
I told some of my cousins this, and one nearly died of shock even at this late date.
This Guthrie had two brothers that died in the service of the Confederacy. One CSA brother came back and the other only served in a Arkansas milita.
I really think what Guthrie did was choose life over death
as he had a wife and four little girls at home.
Yours was probably like this man, joined the Confederacy and then seeing how badly everything was going switched sides.
In what might be called northern Arkansas at that time, it was not in his best interest to be Confederate.
You really need to check the Gerdes site which is available at the top of this site.
It appears to me that your ancestor was not so caught up in the war that it bothered him to change sides and that is probably what happened in my opinion.
Hopefully someone who knows much more than I do, will answer you.
Good luck.
Linda
