The present-day county seat of Izard County is Melbourne. During the war, Mount Olive was the county seat, and Izard County, at that time, included most of present-day Stone County. Melbourne was voted the county seat in 1874, after a bitter campaign between it and another town. In fact, Melbourne was not a town during the war. The settlement was called Mill Creek.
