Maj. William Gipson

Back about the time I got hurt, there was a discussion thread with a question about Maj. William Gipson that I never got around to answering.

William Gipson, who served as a captain and major in the 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles, and later as major of Gipson's Battalion Arkansas Mounted Rifles, spelled his name "Gipson" (with a "p"), though his name has often been erroneously transcribed as "Gibson". His Compiled Service Record includes several documents bearing his signature. Also, various Scott County census and legal records all confirm the spelling of his name.

When I get caught up on my emails, I'll post what little I know about his short-lived battalion of mounted rifles, and its relationship to Chew's battalion of sharpshooters.
