Bryan, I agree with you completely.
You and I both know of someone who 140 years later are still searching trying to find out what happened to their ancestor in the Civil War, so there is a lot of interest.
If I were half my age and writing a paper to complete my masters in history, I would have excellent subject matter by staying within my own family connections. But, since I am nearing the end of a lifetime of teaching, I believe someone else will need to pick up that challenge.
Part of the reason I turned into someone who actively sought out all of this were the stories I heard as a child.
If a person wants their children to know their heritage, then it had better be taught at home.
