Re: Compulsory service in occupied Arkansas

Bryan,

I believe you told me once there was a lot of turmoil over Confederate consription in Central AR and it may have motivated some men to become Unionist. Did the U.S. Army have a lot of influence there in late 1863?

My wife had three ancestors from Clark County who enlisted in the 4th AR Cavalry-USA in Nov. 1863.

MORPHEW, GARNER P. Pvt - Enl 17 Nov 1863 at Benton, AR. Age 16.

MORPHEW, JOHN Pvt - Enl 17 Nov 1863 at Benton, AR. Age 45. Original disch furnished by War Dept 29 Nov 1893

One of their brothers, Geremiah Morphew, deserted the 33rd AR in Aug. 1863 and also enlisted in the 4th AR.

MARPHEW(sic), JEREMIAH Pvt - Enl 20 Dec 1863 at Benton, AR. Age 20. Mustered out 28 Mar 1864. Disch certificate furnished 29 Sep 1894.

33rd AR, Co. H
MORPHEW, GERYMIAH Pvt - Age 18. Enl 18 May 1862 in Clark Co, AR. Left sick at Monroe, LA 4 Aug 1863. Has not reported. Considered a deserter 29 Feb1864.

Then, there were the other three brothers:

Co. H, 33rd AR
MORPHEW, ELIHU A. Pvt - Age 22. Enl 18 May 1862 in Clark Co, AR. Left sick at Monroe, LA 4 Aug 1863. Has not reported. Considered a deserter 29 Feb 1864.

MORPHEW, SOLOMON Pvt - Age 25. Enl 18 May 1862 in Clark Co, AR. Left sick at Monroe, LA 4 Aug 1863. Has not reported. Considered a deserter 29 Feb 1864.

Only one brother remained in Confederate service.
MORPHEW, SEABORN H. Pvt
Enl 7 May 1862 in Clark Co, AR. Died 5 Jul 1862 at a Little Rock, AR hospital. Co. F, 37th AR
