"Curtis was unable to sustain himself after moving to Batesville following Pea Ridge and was forced to move his army to Helena."

Curtis was bluffed into moving the Helena by a bunch of very resourceful men in Arkansas who were able to convince Curtis that a strong force still existed after Van Dorn's leaving. The Bluff by Roane and Hindman was that there was no organized Confederate army in Arkansas to oppose Curtis 11,000 man army.

Curtis could have marched on Devall's Bluff and taken Little Rock by the end of May 1862, had Curtis not been convinced that the small cavalry force of Parson Regiment and Chrisman Battalion shielded a larger force behind the White River. A lucky shot at St Charles that disabled the USS Mound City was the shot that doomed Curtis ambitions to capture Little Rock. But If Curtis had moved in May instead of being bluffed by the Cavalry action at Whitney Lane There would have been no battle of St Charles, June 17th 1862.
