Doyle, at the time Van Dorn was ordered to join Johnston's army east of the river it may have made sense, if the prevailing thinking was that it would be a short war. But, as the war dragged on, the result of stripping the Trans-Mississippi Department of it troops was the loss of the vast resources of the department. So, it did prove to be shortsighted, from the perspective of our 20/20 hindsight.
