The same thing occurred with a James W. Herndon of Co G 2nd Ark Inf (a Bradley County unit). There is a VA marker in Saline County for a James W. Herndon but while my students were doing local research it was discovered through census and other local records that this man was from Georgia and moved to Saline county after 1870 and there are 3 men who served in Georgia units named James W. Herndon. so the marker in the Bethel Cemetery is not the James W. Herndon from Bradley County and soldier from Co G 2nd Ark Inf.
