A great read (I thought) about the relationship between Richard Taylor and Kirby Smith is "Crisis in Confederate Command" by Jeff Prushankin. It covers a lot on the background of the two before they headed west of the river and the influence that service had on them when they got to the Trans-Mississippi and the conflict between the two and the affect their squabling had on events in the Trans-Mississippi.
