David, your point is well taken regarding Arkansas Post. The apparently unauthorized display of white flags by members of the 24th Texas Cavalry (Dismounted) was quickly taken advantage of by the Yankees, who, as Churchill reported, "crowded upon my lines, and not being prevented by the brigade commander [Garland] from crossing, as was his duty, I was forced to the humiliating necessity of surrendering the balance of my command."

This episode appears not to have adversely affected Churchill's reputation. Churchill's "dig" at Col. Robert R. Garland, commanding brigade, was, in my opinion, unfair. Garland found himself in the same quandry as Churchill -- the white flag had been raised and the Yankees immediately ceased firing and crowded his lines. Under the usages of war, it would have been dishonorable for Garland or Churchill to have continued the fight. Garland's reputation was tarnished by this episode, and his request for a Court of Inquiry to clear his name was refused, "due to exigencies of the service," and the fact that many of principals involved were by that time dead.

I don't know of any book dealing exclusively with the capture of Arkansas Post, but one of the best accounts is contained in "One of Cleburne's Command: The Civil War Reminiscences of Capt. Samuel T. Foster, Granbury's Texas Brigade, CSA."
