Danny, since we're inviting comment and discussion about TMD generals, no discussion would be complete without bringing up Sterling Price and John Magruder.
I'd like to know if Magruder was transferred to the Trans-Mississippi because he stepped on someone's toes, or if he was deemed to be particularly qualified to serve in that unique part of the Confederacy.
One thing about Magruder that stands out loud and clear is that he was a pathological organizer. The O.R. are full of his lengthy plans and proposals for organizing everything from the department's cavalry to the cotton trade. Actually, in my opinion, his proposals for the most part were sound.
Sterling Price was one of the most overrated generals of the war from a purely military standpoint, but worth his weight in gold with regard to keeping the Missouri troops in the game.
