The standard method of linear measurement used by the Corps of Engineers in those days involved a chain of predetermined length and a couple of men repeatedly moving it along and counting the evolutions. For long distances they counted paces. But I can't imagine that the Yankees would traipse all over the Ouachita Mountains with a measuring chain or a private counting footsteps. Surely they must have estimated the distances.
