Reports and memories of the incident are few, and sketchy, but it appears to have occurred during a night crossing of the Green River. General Hardee apparently lost his baggage in the same incident. A.T. Hawthorn assumed command of the regiment after Lyons' death, and Capt. Gordon Peay of Company A was elected to take Hawthorn's place as Lt. Colonel of the regiment.
