Bryan, the Memphis Appeal 10-12-61 said that on Thursday night, while Lyon was directing the crossing of some of his men ove the TN River, his horse fell down the bank and he broke his neck.

This story was picked up in the jackson and Little Rock newspapers.

I'm not vouching for its correctness, but it shows that the TN River place of death was reported at the time, and not just in 1899.
