Re: Matlock's Arkansas Infantry

Thanks, Bryan. Confederate accounts of Prairie Grove are filled with references to "Colonel Matlock's regiment" and "Matlock's regiment" and "Colonel Young's regiment" and "Young's regiment."

(The same is true, of course, of other Confederate units at PG such as McNeil's/Hart's regiment but I digress. Lets stick with Matlock's/Young's for the purpose of this discussion.)

All of this brings up an interesting question (interesting to me at least): Matlock had been gone a month prior to Prairie Grove but in their reports several officers still refered to the regiment with Matlock's name attached. Was it still officially Matlock's regiment? Or was it officially Young's regiment but some officers used the old name out of habit? When did it become Gause's regiment?

What was the process during Hindman's tenure by which a unit changed names when the old commander died or departed? Of course I am assuming there was a process, since both Hindman and AAG Newton were OCD types, but maybe I am wrong again. Your thoughts?
