Paul,

My ggg-grandfather, Moses Crittenden, a country store owner, farmer and mixed-blood Cherokee, joined up with the 13th Kansas Infantry in early 1864 and deserted from this unit about five months later and fled to the Indian Territory. Since all of his family, and I mean ALL, were Confederate Cherokees in the 1st and 2nd Cherokee Mounted Rifles and Moses had been a slaveowner prior to the war, we believe he probably joined the 13th Kansas as a matter of self-preservation. Polk County, Arkansas was a real "no man's land" in 1864, with atrocities being committed by partisans, "scaliwags" and Pin Indians. Neither side had clean hands in Western Arkansas at this time. We think to keep himself and his family safe, he joined the 13th Kansas, spent a little time garrisoned at Van Buren, AR and as soon as it looked possible and safe he and his family left and joined their relatives in the Indian Territory. They didn't do it for land, money or slaves. They were just trying to stay alive.
