In a preceding discussion thread, we kicked around the subject of some home guard companies that were organized in 1863 under the auspices of the Union occupation army. About 18 months later, a somewhat less haphazard organization of Unionist home defense companies was authorized by Maj. Gen. J. J. Reynolds, commanding the Department of Arkansas, and styled as the "Arkansas Militia." Following is a list of officer appointments approved by Reynolds in 1865 to 1866. The county notation following each name indicates where the officer's company was raised. In most, but not all, cases this was also the officer's home county.
