In August 1862, Benjamin F. Shepherd, a newly commissioned lieutenant in the 1st Arkansas Mounted Rangers (later the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, US) was taken from his home near Marianna and murdered for his refusal to take an oath of allegiance to the Confederacy.
