Good point, Frank. Confederate soldiers didn't have individual service records. A soldier's service was documented on his company's muster roll. His name was entered on the roll after being mustered into service. If a recruit or conscript died before being mustered, it's as if he never served at all. And, as Alan pointed out, if the muster roll was lost or destroyed the soldier's record would not be listed in the Compiled Service Record, which is, for the most part, a compilation of individual entries from unit muster rolls. That's why there is such a black hole of information from Trans-Mississippi units. Very few muster rolls from units in the TMD, dated later than the January/February 1864 rolls, ever reached Richmond.
