The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Ladies Signed The Amnesty Oath?

I'm still going through the list and checking it against my database. Most of the men on the list were formerly members of the Desha County Militia in 1861. Quite a few of them subsequently served in various Confederate volunteer companies.

Bob, one unexpected result of your post is that I was able to resolve a peculiar muster roll entry. A few years ago I put D. H. C. Moore, of Desha County, on a to-do list of men I needed to do some more research on; then I misplaced the list and forgot all about him. When I saw his name on the list you posted, it reminded me to get back to him.

D. H. C. Moore was transferred to Co. B, 3rd Arkansas Cavalry, on September 23, 1863. The company muster roll states that he had enlisted in an unspecified company at Prentiss, Mississippi, on March 10, 1862. This didn't match up with any Arkansas companies, and I always intended to pursue this further. So, after seeing his name on the oath list, I did some research and found him in Co. E, 28th Mississippi Cavalry (later redesignated as the 2nd Confederate Infantry).

Coincidentally, I found a roster of the 28th Mississippi Cavalry in my files, and in looking through it I found what appears to be the names of some other Desha County men. The roster consists of name and rank only, so to verify all this it looks like I'm going to have to undertake another research project -- as if I didn't have enough projects already. If this pans out, it will resolve the service of some Desha County men who don't appear on the rosters of any Arkansas regiments.

So, thanks again, Bob, for posting the list. You just never know what will pop up when you post something on this board.
