No, he did not return after the war. He was murdered in August 1862 for refusing to take an oath to the Confederacy. He had just joined the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry, US the month before. And as far as him taking a trip home, that would not be too surprising given that the regiment was organizing in nearby Helena (about 25 miles away).
