I've copied large topographical maps using a digital camera. After reading Scaife's "The Campaign for Atlanta" with all it's great maps, I wanted to figure out where my hill is compared to where my 2gr-grandfather's brigade was on the ridge behind me after the battle of Cassville, GA. I went to the library and laid the appropriate topographical maps out on the floor (with permission) and put the camera on a tripod looking down and took photos- worked great! If necessary you could always "stitch" the photos back together with the right software too but I didn't know I could do that at the time and really didn't have the need to.
