Alan, that sounds like John W. Davis, of Hempstead County, who enlisted in Co. K, 12th Arkansas Infantry, at Washington, Arkansas, on June 30, 1861; and was mustered into service at Arkadelphia, Arkansas, on August 8, 1861, for twelve months. He was absent on sick furlough back in Hempstead County when the 12th Arkansas was captured at Island No. 10 on April 8, 1862. He subsequently enlisted in Co. F, 24th Arkansas Infantry, at Washington, Arkansas, on June 21, 1862, for three years or the war. He was transferred to Co. D, Hardy’s Arkansas Regiment, about February 8, 1863. The last record I have of him is a report that he was court-martialed on March 14, 1864. There's no record of the charge or the verdict, but, given the regiment, the time and the location, it was probably for being absent without leave. The punishment, if he was found guilty, would have been minimal -- probably extra duty.
