It was not at all unusual for hospital and prison records to have errors in a soldier's name, which is one reason why modern-day researchers tend to be seen pulling their hair out in big handfuls.

That's also why the NPS Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System is a little tricky -- all those hospital and POW errors are included as alternate spellings of a soldier's name, but a lot of people aren't aware of that fact; so they assume that (for example) John Smith, John W. Smith, J. W. Smith, J. Smith, J. Wesley Smith, Wesley Smith, Wesley J. Smith, W. J. Smith, etc., etc., are all different soldiers. Makes research very interesting.
