Bill, in handling prisoners of war the procedure was for the prisoner to identify himself by name, rank and unit. So Oliver C. Gray is the one who provided that information to his captors. Of course, he had resigned his commission earlier that year, and was succeeded by Capt. Robert Hawkins Dedman, who remained in command of Company A until the end of the war.

In similar cases I've seen, an officer who had no current assignment when captured would normally give his last rank and regiment to his captors. This was apparently what Gray did, which raises the question of whether he was, in fact, ever actually commissioned in the Navy. Or, was he assigned to some duty that he thought was not prudent to disclose to his captors, and so gave his old assignment as cover?
