Thanks for the citation, John. The salient part of the Feb. 17, 1867, letter from Horace Allis says that "A Capt. Riefe was one of those who in Executing his mission to "burn out" was pierced by three balls simultaneously either of which was mortal with his torch in his hand he met his death which continued burning until the hand that held it was blackened by the smoke and fire." The letter came from the Dartmouth College library.
