Linda, a friend of mine was involved in the fight for Dunning Cemetery. It was the site of the 19th century "Potters Field" burial ground for city indigents, victims of the 1871 Chicago fire, and suchlike. But the documents noting its site were somehow missing from the files of the county records, and thus the developer just went ahead with the shopping center and parking lot. It was only after the work had substantially commenced that workers started digging up remains on the site, at which point the mistake was discovered.

And yes, some people are suspicious at how such documents were removed from the file. This happens often in Chicago.

Having done the book article, I'll be happy to share what I have. If you have the original of the McCray photo, I'd love to get a copy. For my book I tracked down Mrs. Louise Watkins and the Merritt family and obtained a xerox copy.
