Scott, I have sent you an e-mail. I will be glad to share what little I know about the 5th Illinois. Since there were 10 companies to a regiment, and three companies to a Battalion, I would assume that the 5th Illinois Cav while in Smithville would have been divided into three camps by Batalion size. Camp Furguson (Sharp County near Calamine) was commanded by Major A.H. Seley, who dispatched 3 companies during the skirmish near Smithville, Arkansas to aid Lt. Wilson of Company D, who was threatened by Confederate forces. Since He was only a Major and not a Colonel (usual rank for a regimental commander)and had three companies, am I correct in assuming this was a Battalion size camp? Also a 2nd Union Camp was maintained on the William Lane place(off Pete Wasson Road) which was not far from New Hope Baptist Church. Church records from the summer/fall 1862 indcates that Union soldiers attended church services there. However, no regimental information was recorded. Any ideas on how to find out if they were members of the 5th? Also a third Camp near Smithville proper was maintained but again no regimental information has been identified. My theory is the regiment was on bivouc by battalions during this period. I have no proof of this,but based on the problems encountered by the 1st Nebraska Calvary at Batesville, it would be much easier to support Battalion sized forces than an entire regiment. Given the shortage of roads and the terrain and distance from the supply base, it would be logical. Do you have any information regarding the regiment during the summer and fall of 1862?
