Originally from Franklin Co TN Capt Williams (4 June 1811) moved to Conway Co Arkansas about 1840. His father was from North Carolina. He married Margaret Ann ("Peggy") Hill (31 MAY 1813) in Franklin Co. TN in 1832.

His Civil War service began with a 6 month enlistment in the 1st Battalion Arkansas Infantry (Union).

1st Battalion, Arkansas Infantry (6 months, 1862)

Organized at Helena, Ark., July 20, 1862. Attached to District of Eastern Arkansas and duty at Helena, Ark., till October. Moved to St. Louis, Mo., and duty at Benton Barracks, Mo., till December. Mustered out December 31, 1862.

He then, according to Margaret widow's pension application enlisted with the 3rd Battalion Arkansas Infantry {which I believe is actually the 3rd Arkansas Reg. Cavalry USA -- JJR} (Arkansas Pension application #342524 dated July 25 1886)

The OR record would indicate he scouted for the 3rd Ark Cav but I've found no offical roster listing for him in that unit per se. He may very well have been acting as a civilian scout given his advanced age and proximty of his home to the headquarters of the 3rd plus his prior proven Union service. If so that is reason enough for Col. Witt's men to have murdered him at his home on Feb 12, 1865.

3RD REGT ARKANSAS CAVALRY, UNION

Organized at Little Rock, Ark., February, 1864. Attached to Post of Little Rock, Ark., 7th Army Corps, Dept. Arkansas, to May, 1864. 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 7th Army Corps, to September, 1864. 4th Brigade, Cavalry Division, 7th Army Corps, to February, 1865. Post of Lewisburg, Ark., 7th Army Corps, to August, 1865

Brayn Howerton may have more info on him and the 3rd Ark Cav.
