11th & 17th Arkansas re Jackson LA incident....

Hi Anthony and Mike -

I think Mike is referring to the info in "Confederate Soldiers and Sailors of Maury Co, Tn." (Jill Garrett editor,1970.) that was written by Hiram Hendley and Allen Powell:

"These negroes had been enlisted in Ark. from the same county that the 13th [11th & 17th Ark.] came from. The negro soldiers and their white officers had rendered themselves particularly obnoxious to the Ark. people by their unrestrained conduct, accounts of which had reached the 13th. [11th & 17th Ark.] regiment."

Mike had earlier kindly posted this info provided by men in the 9th Battalion Tenn. Cav. (Col. DuMonteil commanding).

As best I can figure out, the African-American units present at Jackson, LA on Aug. 3, 1863 were:

1st Rgt. Inf Corps d' Afrique
3rd Rgt. Inf Corps d' Afrique
6th Rgt. Inf Corps d' Afrique

I don't know if the CSRs of the men in these units would provide any useful information re their home addresses and tell us whether or not any of them might have been from Arkansas counties providing soldiers to the 11th & 17th Arkansas..?????

I am guessing that it is perhaps more likely that any alleged "obnoxious" behavior of the African-American units occurred in/around the East Feliciana Parish area and was reported by local Louisianans to members of Col. John L. Logan's cavalry brigade, but......?????

One of these days we will get a handle on this puzzle...??

Have a Happy Thanksgiving...!!!!

y.v.o.s.,

Ken
