Re: Soldiers from Searcy Co., AR

Connie, Being a native Searcy Countian, I have to put my two cents in for whats its worth. I looked at the 1860 census of Searcy Co. and found your relative, John Johnson, as you stated. Do you know who the other 10 members of his family are, in the census? My history tells me that Buffalo Township, where they lived in 1860, existed from 1854 until it was annexed into Beaver Township in 1875. Beaver Township is located in the north-east corner of Searcy Co. It is bordered on the north by Marion Co. (real old county) and on the east by Baxter Co.(not so old). History tells me Baxter Co. was formed in 1873 from parts of Fulton, Izard, Marion, and Searcy Counties. Do you suppose that the area where they lived in 1860, was annexed into Baxter Co. in 1873? If so, and they lived there, they would be residents of Baxter Co., after 1873. Now, to the Civil War. I can only tell you about my family in Searcy Co., but I would guess they were like most others at that time. A dozen or more fought for Southern Independence, but at least three fought for the northern cause. Of these three, two went north into Missouri and joined Union Units. A g-g-uncle joined the Union Army at Fayetteville. The Southern Gentlemen joined units in Searcy and surrounding counties. Many joined at Yellville, in Marion Co. Several units were organized there. One g-g-uncle joined in neighboring Polk Co. His wife was from that area. I hope this info. has given you some new ideas in your search. Good luck! Bob
