1st Ark. Inf. - Washington Telegraph 25 Feb. 1863

I would be most appreciative if someone could provide me with the text of a letter that was written by Private Samuel H. Williams, Co. I, 1st Arkansas Infantry which appeared in the 25 Feb. 1863 edition of the Washington Telegraph. In the letter Private Williams describes his experiences at the battle of Murfressboro.

For the past six years I have been researching and writing a book on the battle of Murfreesbro/Stone's River. Volume I dealing with the Union army has been completed and is now at the printer. Volume II dealing with the Army of Tennessee has proved to be more difficult because of the scarcity of material. Particular troublesome has been the role of Brigadier General Lucius E. Polk's brigade of Cleburne's division. While General Polk's report appears in the Official Records, those of his regimental commanders do not.

Any information dealing with the role of the 1st Arkansas Infantry, 13th Arkansas Infantry and 15th Arkansas Infantry, all in Polk's brigade, would be much appreciated.

My Thanks and GOD's BLessings,
Lanny Smith
