The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Re: Change of Topic: National Register Cemeteries

Jim, the primary benefit of NR listing is honorific. However, if the cemetery is owned by a non-profit organization, the owners can seek grant funding from us for restoration work (Fairview Cemetery in Van Buren is a recent grantee, though not for work in its Confederate section).

To see a list of all of the Confederate cemeteries, etc., that are listed in the NR in Arkansas, visit our website at http://www.arkansaspreservation.org/historic-properties/national-register/search.asp and type Confederate in the name column.

For information on grant opportunities, go to http://www.arkansaspreservation.org/preservation-services/grant-programs/. The Historic Preservation Restoration Grant program could be applicable to Confederate cemeteries.

And while at the AHPP website, you might want to check on waht the Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission has been up to by visiting http://www.arkansaspreservation.org/preservation-services/sesquicentennial-commission/.

Hope this helps!

Mark
