Hello. Yes, thanks for the input. I do understand about the importance of the men being furloughed home.
I had two direct ancestors who survived the Battle of Shiloh I feel because they had family close enough that each was able to go home and heal.
One of the stories was found in the widow's pension application of Mary Pearce provided by her brother-in-law who made the trip and picked up his wounded brother, Sgt. Jermiah D. Pearce. J. D. Pearce probably received wonderful care at his father's home in Mifflin after having been "shot through and through." Pearce, who was with the 8th Arkansas, was well enough by the 4th of July to set out walking to catch up with his men.
The other who was shot in the knee was James T. Harper of the 5th Tennessee, Co. H from Jackson, Tenn. I know nothing for sure on him, but he was close to home and it only makes good sense that he did go home.
Just think, over the counter medication would have been a God send.
