Josh --

What is your thesis topic? Could you provide a brief outline of topics covered?

The most readily accessible and visible site for recruiting advertisements would be an Arkansas newspaper. Here's an example from an Alabama newspaper, the Selma Morning Reporter --

RECRUITS WANTED FOR THE THIRD REGIMENT ALABAMA CAVALRY!

This regiment has been in active service in the field for upwards of two years, during which period it has had more than one hundred engagements with the enemy. By authority of Gen. Bragg the following detail from each company has been ordered to proceed to their respective counties for the purpose of recruiting men and horses:

Capt. J. D. Farish and Lieut. H. P. Dulany, Dallas and Wilcox.
Capt. Cole, Marengo and Perry.
Capt. Voltz, Wilcox.
Capt. Hill, Autauga.
Capt. Billingslea and Lieut. Lee, Monroe and Conecuh.
Lieut. C. J. Malone, Choctaw and Clarke.
Capt. J. C. Brown, Mobile.

The citizens are respectfully and urgently requested to assist the recruiting officers in filling up the ranks as rapidly as possible, as the time allotted is but limited. The regiment being composed of companies exclusively from South Alabama, and among the first that entered the service, has peculiar claims upon the exertion of the citizens in assisting to fill up its shattered ranks.
Those who are disposed to join this arm of the service will find it much to their advantage to enter a regiment long organized and officered by competent and experienced officers, who know how to take care of their men.

JAMES HAGAN,

Col. 3rd Alabama Cavalry.
