Just an update. I got my 4th great grandfather's records today from the Arkansas Historical Commission (took two weeks; I thought for sure it would be longer). Turns out he was at Chimborazo Hospital #5 in Richmond from June 17, 1863 to August 11, 1863, with pnemonia, and returned to duty. He later, sure enough, shows up in the muster for the 24th Arkansas, with a notation "transfered from the Trans-Mississippi Dist., bounty due."
Anyone know what "bounty due" means?
According to his records, he was also never paid either (it always said "pay due"). Who do I write to to get his backpay? Anyone know Jefferson Davis's ancestors?
