Re: 23rd Infantry after Port Hudson

More like a particular person. Still on the hunt for the final two years and place of death of g-g-g-grandfather Walter Hansford Williams. He was in the 23rd Inf. National Parks puts him in Co. F, while GenWeb has him in Co. H. He's listed as "present" until 30 April 1863. He did not surrender at Port Hudson. His friend William Andrew Thomason/Thomasson was captured and released the next day(?!). They continued fighting together. Andy took the news of Hansford's death (shot in the head after the surrender at Appomatox) at a skirmish near Mobile, back to his widow in Arkadelphia.

In looking at some old posts I read where Alan said there were no unit records the last year of the war, so, I may never have my questions answered. There is however that hard-headed part of me that just doesn't accept that "never" thing. Ha!

Thanks, Johnny Reb.
