Re: Washington County, Arkansas: Confederate Chero

Joseph W. Carden was enrolled into the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles at Park Hill, Cherokee Nation by Albert Pike on October 4, 1861. He joined the service as an assistant surgeon. He was 35 years old at the time. Carden resigned on April 7, 1862. A note in the file also says that he died of disease. Unfortunately, a date is not given.

According to the 1860 census, there was a J. W. Carden living in Van Buren County, Arkansas. And he is identified as a physician. The ages match too. It's possible this is your man.
