Here is a Missouri State Guard version of the song taken for the army newspaper.

"ROOT HOG OR DIE"

A Song Written for the Army Argus.

Winter time coming, summer time is gone,
We'd like to know the reason the army don't move on.
It makes but little difference, the wherefore or the why,
We're bound to whip the Yankees boys, root hog or die.

It's better to be certain before we strike a blow,
That we are not striking in favor of the foe,
Old Fremont lost his army, while Price was playing sly,
And they're gone to winter quarters where they'll root hog or die.

Take courage then my comrades, don't mind the cold,
By time the winter's over the Yanks will be sold,
We'll beat them standing weather, on the field we'll make them fly,
Till they'll wish they'd stayed at home and learned to root hog or die.

Let the cowards leave us and skulk away for home,
The Home Guards will be waiting, and glad to see them come;
They'll one by one arrest them, and make them swear a lie,
Or work like Abe's white n-----s till they root hog or die.

Then let us stick together and rally to our flag,
Old Price has always whipped them no matter how they brag.
We all will be united in freedom's holy tie,
The Yanks must be conquered till they root hog or die.
