The Arkansas in the Civil War Message Board

Record of Events

Unlike most of the other Arkansas cavalry regiments in the Trans-Mississippi, Monroe’s muster rolls were detailed and precise. Some of the captains even completed the all-imporant Record of Events section of the rolls. Here are the ones that were completed—

Company A.

1 Mar 1863 – 30 Apr 1863—Station: Mill Creek.
Company in action at Fayetteville, Arks, April 18th, 1863. No. men in engagement 32. This company was organized April 14th, 1862, resulting in the election of: R. W. Barnes, Capt., L. D. Harshaw, 1st Lieut.; S. C. Paine, 2d Lieut.; W. F. McCombs, 3d Lieut.

1 May 1863 – 30 Jun 1863—Station: Near Fort Smith, Arkansas.
The Company of 32 men was on scout from 23d of May. Started from Fort Smith. Traveled through Washington & Benton counties & into the edge of Missouri. Returned June 4th, 1863. Moved from Gum Springs near Fort Smith, June 5th, across Arkansas River opposite Fort Smith. Moved from Camp opposite Fort Smith June 10th to Van Buren. Moved from Van Buren on the 21st of June to Mt. Comfort, Washington County, Arks, arrived there on the 25th of June 1863.

1 Jan 1864 – 29 Feb 1864—Station: Camp E. Kirby Smith.
Marched to Center Point, a distance of 18 miles, three different times. Remained in winter quarters the remainder of the specified time within.

Company B.

1 Aug 1862 – 30 Apr 1863—Station: Camp Gum Springs.
This Company has been constantly on the march; no opportunity of drilling until within the last two weeks. Company is improving rapidly. Armed with shot guns. No accoutrements. Clothing very poor.

Company C.

1 Oct 1862 – 30 Apr 1863—Station: Near Fort Smith, Ark.
This Company has been in three engagement, viz, Cane Hill, Prairie Grove and Fayetteville, also in various and sundry scouts too numerous to mention. W. A. ALEXANDER, Capt., Co. C, 1 Ark. Cavalry.

1 May 1863 – 30 Jun 1863—Station: Point Comfort.
This Company has been on one scout since last mustered, as far as Cow Skin Prairie, Mo., by the way of Fayetteville. Started June 22, 1863. Returned July 6, 1863.

1 Jan 1864 – 29 Feb 1864—Station: Camp Kirby Smith.
Nothing of importance has transpired within the last two months.

Company D.

1 May 1863 – 30 Jun 1863—Station: Ft. Smith, Ark.
Camp on Ark. River scouting for 150 North most of the time. Engaged the enemy at Fayetteville, Ark., Apr. 18, ’63. One man mortally wounded, several horses lost.

Company E.

1 Mar 1863 – 30 Apr 1863—Station: Camp Gum Springs, Ark.
Thie Company has taken part in three engagement, viz, Cane Hill, Prairie Grove and Fayetteville. It has also been on a number of important scouts, including the scout when the notorious renegade Capt. Hart and his band of thieves and murderers were captured.

1 May 1863 – 30 Jun 1863—Station: Mt. Comfort.
A greater portion of the Comp any was on a scout since last mustered by way of Fayetteville to Cowskin Prairie, Mo. Lost one man by sickness on the route near the Prairie Grove Battle Field, June 3, ’63.

Company G.

1 Mar 1863 – 30 Apr 1863—Station: Gum Springs, Arks.
This Company was in the fight at Cane Hill on the 27th of Nov. 1862. Also was in the fight at Cane Hill or Prairie Grove on the 6th of Decr. 1862. It was also in the fight at Fayetteville, Arks, on the 18th of April 1863.

Company H.

1 Mar 1863 – 30 Apr 1863—Station: Van Buren, Arks.
This Company has been detached from the Regiment since the 7 Apr. 1863 and have been stationed at the Post at Van Buren, Arks, and since that time they have doing guard and scouting duty. G. W. BROWN, Capt. Comd’g Co. H of 1 Reg’t Arks Cavalry.

1 May 1863 – 30 Jun 1863—Station: Not stated.
This Company started on scout from Van Buren, Ark., to Cherokee Nation, June 22nd, 1863. Returned to Van Buren July 15th, 1863.

Company K.

1 Mar 1863 – 30 Apr 1863—Station: Gum Springs.
This Company has taken part in three engagements, viz, Cane Hill, Prairie Grove and Fayetteville. It has been on a number of scouts. I. L. ADAIR, Capt.

1 May 1863 – 30 Jun 1863—Station: Not stated.
Capt. Adair’s Company “K”, 6/Monroe’s Regt, left Camp Gum Springs 23 May 1863 with 30 men. Marched through Washington and Benton counties, Ark. Crossed into Missouri, thence to Cherokee Nation. Crossed Grand River. Recrossed the river and returned to Fort Smith June 4, 1863, traveling the distance of 250 miles. Moved from Gum Springs June 5, cross Arkansas River and camped opposite Fort Smith. Marched from Camp near Fort Smith June 10 to Van Buren, Ark. Marched from Van Buren 21st June to Mt. Comfort, Ark., and camped June 25, 1863, marching the distance of 65 miles.

Company L.

1 Mar 1863 – 30 Apr 1863—Station: Not stated.
This Company has been in three engagements, viz, Cane Hill, Prairie Grove and Fayetteville, and a number of important scouts. C. C. WOLFE, Comdg Co. “L”.
