W. H. Brooks in NW Ark 1864-65

In the second half of 1864, Col. William H. Brooks was sent to northwest Arkansas to recruit and organize Confederate guerrilla groups and absentees, and put them to some effective use against the Federal garrisons. Exactly when did this occur? And what were Col. Brooks' orders for this mission? Which units did he manage to organize?
