Over the years at Jenkins Ferry battle field we found many dumped cartridge boxes on the field. They were always in lots of ten with firing caps present(12 caps per 10 rounds). They were found in lots of ten to forty. Forty being the ideal starting number for the Union Army. One confederate box had 19 rounds dumped I assumed he had one in his musket. The interesting thing was the calibre ranged from 54 to 58, some were enfield(Tyler Texas), others were u s springfield and some were carbine ammo. All this in one cartridge box, they must have fired anything they could get down the muzzle. Several confederate dumped cartridge boxes on the south end of the battlefield had mixed ammo. Oh by the way the boxes were dumped during the battle because of the hard rains and flooding ruining alot of their ammo on both sides.
