Re: Question about 7th Mo. Cav. diary

Thanks for posting this Bryce. The entry for Oct 31st seems out of sequence.

29th - Left Missouri crossed a corner of Arkansas camped in the Cherokee Nation. Distance [this] day was 30 miles. [ So they crossed Benton Co. into the Cherokee Nation which must have put them on or near Beatties Prairie and near Maysville AR.]

    30th - Marched 15 miles.

31st - Passed through Pineville, camed on Cowskin, distance 16 miles. [This can't be right. Pineville is in McDonald Co. MO. They were somewhere between Maysville and Cane Hill coming down the Arkansas-Cherokee border.]

Regarding their route through the Indian Territory...

12th - Marched 6 miles, camped on Lanes Creek where General Fagan had collected some beef cattle. [ Where they camped must have been "Gaines Creek", sometimes called South Fork of the Canadian. They had crossed the Arkansas at Wilson's Ford crossing from the Cherokee Nation into the Choctaw Nation and apparently followed the south side of the Canadian to the Texas Road. About the same time, Shelby crossed the Canadian going northwest into the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and foraged along the North Fork of the Canadian. This may be where Fagan got the cattle. They then followed the Texas Road south through Perryville and Boggy Depot. ]
